The Night the Ballroom Mirror Shattered — The Secret Everyone Tried to Forget
Chapter 1 — The Chandelier Echo
The crystal chandeliers of the Grandview Ballroom threw a brilliant, almost merciless light across the polished marble floor. It was the anniversary gala everyone in the city had talked about for weeks — black ties, champagne towers, a string quartet in the corner, and at the center of it all, the perfect couple: Marcello, immaculate in his tailored tuxedo, and his wife Caroline Mercer, radiant in a bright pink satin gown that curved proudly over her rounded belly.
They were expecting. Everyone said so. Everyone smiled at it.
Except one guest who was too young to know how to smile politely.
Three-year-old Lily stood beside her mother near the cocktail tables, swinging her little legs, bored by the grown-up laughter — until her eyes fixed on the glamorous woman across the room. Her tiny arm rose. Her finger pointed, unwavering, toward the sweeping marble staircase.
And in a voice clear enough to freeze the air in the room, she said:
“Mommy, that lady’s belly fell off upstairs.”
The quartet seemed to stumble over its own notes. Conversations died in mid-sentence.
Caroline Mercer’s smile did not move — but the color drained from her face, leaving her ash-white against the bright pink satin. Her hands flew instinctively to her belly, pressing down hard, as if guarding something fragile.
