The Little Girl with the Golden Button Is the Stolen Heir

THE SECRET PASSAGE

Diego remembered Marisol at last — he had kept her photograph for nine years and had once returned to San Aurelio, only to be told she had taken the money and left. He found Valentina wandering in a secret passage behind the library’s map, lost from the study room. He asked her age: nine, born February 17th — matching the timeline of his departure from San Aurelio at the end of May.

Valentina showed him the golden button she kept inside her stuffed rabbit. Paulina returned; Diego hid the girl. Afterward Valentina vanished, leaving a handwritten note: “The lady in white knows my name.”

THE LADY IN WHITE

Marisol found Valentina in the laundry room. The girl told her the “lady in white” — Paulina — had come to the study, knew her name and where they had lived in Toledo, and had peered into the torn seam of the rabbit and seen the golden button. Marisol decided to quit and take her daughter away.

Inés came with a confession: Don Rafael had once ordered her to burn Marisol’s letters, but she had burned only the envelopes and kept the letters. She gave Marisol a brass key to the old linen cellar beneath the east staircase, and told her she had once overheard Paulina arguing with Don Rafael about “a child”: “If the girl is born, Diego will never belong to us.”

Marisol’s packed bags had disappeared from their room.

THE BURNING ARCHIVE

At midnight Inés led Marisol into the cellar. In a cedar chest: twenty-three letters Marisol had sent Diego — intercepted — and letters Diego had sent Marisol, which she had never received. Each had been deceived into believing the other had betrayed them. Beneath a false panel: Don Rafael’s ledger, recording payments for watching Marisol (coded M.V.), surveilling the clinic, paying Serrano security men. One underlined line: “Child confirmed female. Blood analysis retained by E.V.” And: “Heir provision activated under sealed codicil. Delivery entrusted to E.V.”

A red camera light blinked in a shelf crack — someone locked the cellar door from outside and poured fire through the vent. The two women stuffed the letters and ledger into pillowcases and crawled through the iron bars into the drainage tunnel. Above the hatch, a man’s voice ordered: “Find the ledger.” Marisol recognized Sebastián Serrano, Paulina’s father.
