Elena’s story rewrote everything: Julian was alive. He had escaped five years ago. He had a son named Leo, born in that very hospital, whose mother died in childbirth. Julian was the true heir of the Moretti trust — Luca’s father had altered the will to take Bellini investment money, on the condition that Vanessa marry the heir. Julian refused Vanessa; Luca didn’t. Their mother had been locked in room 317 when she discovered the truth and tried to rescue Julian; Elena was locked in 318 for helping her.
Elena pressed a gold bracelet into Emma’s hand — Julian’s, left behind — and told her to give it to the person Luca trusted most. Engraved on the clasp was a name: Chloe. Emma’s sister. Then the hospital doors slammed shut, locked from the outside.
THE FIRE
Smoke poured into the room — someone was burning the hospital to erase the evidence. Luca ripped the cast-iron fireplace cover off and smashed it through the reinforced glass, and the three of them escaped down the fire stairs into the snowy woods.
As they ran, Elena explained: Julian had escaped five years earlier, wounded, and hidden in a diner on the South Side. Chloe — then working there — hid him in the storeroom for three days and brought him food. Julian gave her the bracelet to repay her silence, and told her where he had hidden Leo. Emma suddenly understood: her father had been “fixing the heating” all winter, keeping the basement door locked — and Chloe had been carrying meals down there. “Get in the car,” Luca said.
THE BOY IN THE BASEMENT
They reached Emma’s South Side home near 2 a.m. Chloe stood with a baseball bat beside a small black-haired boy with big brown eyes — Leo, the image of Luca at six. Leo handed Luca an old leather wallet: inside, a stack of train tickets and a photograph — Vanessa handing a large duffel bag to a scarred man. “The bad woman took my father,” Leo said. “He had to go away so she wouldn’t hurt me.”
Luca understood: Vanessa hadn’t just faked Julian’s death — she was holding him to control the trust money. Then came the sound of men’s shoes on the floor upstairs. Bellini’s people were already there.
GUNFIGHT
A gunfight erupted in the house. Luca covered Emma as she ran Chloe and Leo out through the storm door into the snowy backyard, to the 24-hour diner where Chloe used to work. There, Chloe told the rest: Julian had brought Leo to them three months ago, after the Bellinis discovered he was still in Chicago — surrender, or they’d hunt the boy. Emma’s father had built the boy’s room himself.
Luca made a call: Bellini’s men were handled, and Vanessa’s father wasn’t in Rome — he was the one who’d sent them. Luca knew where Julian was being held: the one place he’d sworn never to return to. Emma studied the photograph again — the marble statue and oil paintings in the background. It was Luca’s own mansion. Vanessa was hiding Julian in the locked room upstairs: his mother’s old bedroom.
THE MOTHER’S ROOM
At dawn Emma slipped back into the mansion and used key 317 to open Lucia Moretti’s bedroom. Julian sat zip-tied to an armchair, gaunt and hollow-eyed. Emma cut him free. He panicked — it was a trap, he warned: Vanessa wanted Luca to find him, so her father could frame Luca for murdering his twin brother that very night and seize the entire estate.
