My Daughter-in-Law Gave Me a Curfew in My Own House — At 8:05 the Next Night, I Handed Her an Envelope (Full Story)

“Eat after us, be in your room by eight, and no visitors,” my daughter-in-law told me after moving into my house. The next night at 8:05, she stormed into my dinner with friends and ordered me to “wrap this up.” I stood, handed her a sealed envelope, and said, “You’re right. Start packing.” She thought I was angry about her rules. She had no idea what I’d quietly changed two months earlier — or what it was about to cost her.

Three weeks before that dinner, my son Daniel called me sounding completely defeated.

His work hours had been cut. Their lease was ending. Melissa was pregnant with their second child, and they needed somewhere to stay “for a month or two.”

I had lived alone since my husband died six years earlier. The house felt too quiet most days. So I said yes.

I cleared two upstairs bedrooms, made room in the garage, and even paid to have some of their furniture moved. I thought I was helping my son through a difficult season. Melissa apparently thought I was being handed management of the property.

By the third day, she had reorganized my kitchen. By the fifth, she had changed the thermostat settings. A few days later, she told me my television was too loud.

Then one evening, she placed a sheet of paper on the kitchen counter.

HOUSE RULES.

I thought she was joking. She wasn’t.

“No guests after 6 p.m.” “Kitchen reserved for immediate family from 5 to 7.” “Quiet hours begin at 8 p.m.” And then she explained that I should wait until they finished dinner before using my own kitchen.
