My Son Lied That Dinner Was Canceled — Then I Caught Them Plotting to Sell My House

It began with a lie so small I nearly forgave it on the spot.

“Mom, dinner’s canceled,” Matthew told me over the phone. Less than an hour later, my phone lit up with a charge from the exact restaurant where our family dinner was supposed to take place.

The card they used was mine.

I could have called him back and demanded an explanation. Instead, I put on my coat and drove downtown. Through the restaurant window I saw them all — Matthew, Rachel, their spouses, a table crowded with wine and appetizers. Claire, my daughter-in-law, who was supposedly too sick to leave her bedroom, looked perfectly healthy. There was even an empty place setting at the table. Mine, I assumed.

I took a table nearby, out of their sight, and listened.

At first it was ordinary family chatter. Then someone mentioned selling in the spring. Another voice brought up a luxury senior community. Then Matthew said everything would become easier once the house was converted into cash.

My house. My future. My money. Being divided up over a dinner they expected me to pay for.

I reached into my purse and touched the envelope I had brought with me. They had no idea what was inside — or what I had already done that morning.
