Poor Maid Saved The Mafia Boss Twins While His Wife Abandoned Them — And Now He Won’t Let Her Leave

Clara Hayes watched a mother zip her diamonds into a travel bag while her babies screamed upstairs. Then the gunmen entered the nursery corridor, and Clara heard the order: “Leave no Costello breathing.” She had one way out — and two helpless reasons to turn back.

The night had started ordinarily enough. Clara was pressing a silk evening gown in the laundry room when the explosion struck. The iron jumped beneath her hand. Dust fell from the ceiling. Upstairs, something heavy crashed across the marble floor — and then came the gunfire.

Damian Costello was in Boston. Most of his guards had gone with him. Clara grabbed her phone: no service. The estate’s wireless network had vanished. She could have slipped out through the basement delivery entrance. She knew the path.

Then she heard Oliver crying.

THE MOTHER WHO CHOSE DIAMONDS

Clara climbed the servants’ staircase. In the master corridor, Victoria Costello stood beside her bedroom safe in a red silk robe, stuffing velvet jewelry boxes into a leather duffel.

“The boys are still upstairs,” said Briggs, one of the remaining guards.

“Then get them.”

“I’m taking you both through the east passage.”

“No. They’re coming through that side.”

“We can still reach the nursery.”

“The boat is waiting.”
