The Question That Changed Everything
“Why doesn’t she want to leave?”
Vanessa turned toward him, recovering fast. “Luca, darling, she’s making things up.”
“I asked Claire.”
The entire room stopped breathing. I swallowed and told him the truth: his mother knew some sign language. He stared at me for a long moment, and then he said, slowly, “My aunt Patricia was deaf.”
“Your mother told me,” I said.
I will never forget Vanessa’s face in that moment. The confidence drained out of it like color from a photograph. For the first time all evening, she looked genuinely frightened.
Luca pulled out the chair beside his mother’s wheelchair and sat down. “Claire,” he said. “Ask her why she’s afraid.”
I crouched beside the old woman. Her trembling fingers began to move, and I translated: she had never agreed to leave her home.
“That’s nonsense,” Vanessa cut in. “She signed the papers herself.”
