“Where are they?” Luca asked.
“With the attorney.”
“Bring them here.”
Ten minutes later a folder lay open on the dining table, and twenty-six of Chicago’s most influential people watched Luca Moretti study a signature. Then he looked up, and his voice was very quiet.
“Vanessa. This was signed on September third.”
“Yes.”
“My mother was in intensive care on September third.”
The silence that followed had weight. Vanessa went pale and reached for an explanation — the paperwork had been prepared earlier, the attorney must have dated it incorrectly. It sounded thin even to her.
Luca turned back to his mother. “Claire. Ask her who signed this.”
