Lucy’s eyes filled with tears.
“She was this morning.”
The chapel erupted.
Someone gasped. Someone cursed. Victoria’s mother stood from the front pew, demanding security. Ethan’s best man, Daniel, stepped forward as if unsure whether to protect Ethan from the girl or the girl from everyone else.
Victoria suddenly yanked free.
“This wedding is not being ruined by some runaway child and fake papers!”
She lunged toward Lucy.
Ethan moved faster.
He caught Victoria by both shoulders and held her back.
“Enough.”
That single word silenced the chapel.
Victoria stared at him as if he had slapped her.
“You believe her?” she whispered.
Ethan looked at the photograph in his hand again.
Olivia smiling beside him twelve years earlier, her hand resting over the small swell of her belly.
He remembered that day. The sun. The lake. Olivia laughing because he had dropped the picnic basket. The way she had leaned into him as if the future had already chosen them.
He remembered the night she came to his apartment, pale and shaking, telling him the baby was not his.
He remembered how she would not meet his eyes.
He remembered how Victoria had shown up two days later with wine and sympathy, saying some women were born to destroy good men.
Now the room tilted beneath him.
“No,” Ethan said quietly. “I don’t believe anyone yet.”
Victoria exhaled.
Then Ethan looked at Daniel.
“Call the police.”
Victoria froze.
“And an ambulance,” Ethan continued. “Tell them Olivia Bennett may be in critical condition at the Route 16 motel.”
Lucy made a broken sound.
Ethan turned to her, his voice softening.
“You came alone?”
She nodded.
“Bus. Then I ran.”
“How did you know where to find me?”
Lucy lifted her chin toward Victoria.
“Mom had the invitation.”
Victoria’s face hardened.
“That’s impossible.”
Lucy reached into the envelope again and pulled out a cream-colored wedding invitation, damp at the edges.
Ethan recognized the embossed letters.
Ethan Pierce and Victoria Hale request the honor of your presence…
But there was handwriting across the back.
Not Olivia’s.
Victoria’s.
A single sentence written in black ink.
You lost once. Stay dead this time.
The chapel went silent again, but this silence was different.
It was not confusion.
It was recognition.
Ethan looked at Victoria.
She whispered, “That is not mine.”
