But no one believed her now.
Daniel took out his phone with shaking hands. Ethan’s aunt began crying in the second row. Victoria’s father, Charles Hale, rose slowly from his seat, his silver hair immaculate, his expression carved from stone.
“Victoria,” he said, low and warning.
She spun toward him.
“Daddy, do something.”
Charles Hale did not move.
For the first time, Ethan saw something pass between them.
Not shock.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Lucy noticed it too.
She pointed at him.
“He knows.”
The old man’s face tightened.
Victoria hissed, “Shut up.”
Ethan stepped fully between Lucy and the Hale family.
“Daniel,” he said, “take Lucy to my car.”
“No!” Lucy grabbed Ethan’s sleeve. “I’m not leaving without you.”
He looked down at her hand on his arm.
Tiny fingers. Cold from the rain. Clinging like she had already lost too much.
Something inside him broke open.
“I’m coming,” he said.
Victoria’s voice rose behind him.
“Ethan, if you walk out of this church, we are over.”
He stopped.
For one terrible second, everyone waited.
Then Ethan turned back toward the altar, took the wedding ring from his pocket, and placed it on the white Bible beside the priest’s hands.
“We were over before I ever got here.”
A wave of sound rolled through the chapel.
Victoria screamed his name.
Ethan did not look back.
He lifted Lucy into his arms because her knees finally gave out, and he carried her down the aisle past the guests, past the fallen bouquet, past the ruined white roses.
Outside, rain hammered the stone steps.
Police sirens wailed in the distance.
Lucy buried her face against his shoulder.
“She told me you wouldn’t come,” she whispered.
Ethan held her tighter.
“She was wrong.”
But as he reached his car, a black SUV parked across the street started its engine.
Inside, through rain-streaked glass, Ethan saw a man watching them.
Then the SUV pulled away fast.
Lucy saw it too.
Her whole body stiffened.
“That’s him,” she whispered.
“Who?”
“The man who came to our room last night.”
Ethan opened the passenger door.
“What man?”
Lucy’s voice shook.
